HOPEWELL
Sunk: 1981
Depth: 11 Meters
GPS: 25-16-300

In 1981 a wooden pile driving rig
which had sunk near the Urangan Pier was refloated. The pile
driving derrick was salvaged and was later installed on Hyne and
Son’s ship the ‘Hopewell’. The barge was then towed out to the
reef loaded with car bodies which were manually pushed off into
the sea.
On its second trip the barge was
sunk fully loaded with car bodies.
As it descended to the seabed it
turned over and came to rest upside down on top of some of the
cars leaving ample space for divers to crawl underneath.

This barge has been a very
successful addition to the reef complex. It is loaded with
prolific growth and is a haven for large cod, blue parrotfish
and flathead which hide inside.
The exposed reinforcing beams on
the bottom are covered with stinging hydroids. |
STEEL BARGE

Also in 1981, a steel twin
pontoon barge which was used for dredging the Urangan Boat
Harbour was left abandoned on the beach at Urangan. This barge
was towed out to make its contribution to the reef. Unlike the
wooden Barge it has not been successful reef material and has
remained relatively barren. |
